A SHARP DIAMETER BOUND FOR UNIPOTENT GROUPS OF CLASSICAL TYPE OVER Z/pZ

چکیده
The unipotent subgroup of a finite group of Lie type over a prime field Fp comes equipped with a natural set of generators; the properties of the Cayley graph associated to this set of generators have been much studied. In the present paper, we show that the diameter of this Cayley graph is bounded above and below by constant multiples of np + n2 log p, where n is the rank of the associated Lie group. This generalizes the result of [E], which treated the case of SLn(Fp). (

Maximal prehomogeneous subspaces on classical groups
Suppose $G$ is a split connected reductive orthogonal or symplectic group over an infinite field $F,$ $P=MN$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup of $G,$ $frak{n}$ is the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical $N.$ Under the adjoint action of its stabilizer in $M,$ every maximal prehomogeneous subspaces of $frak{n}$ is determined.

The Cauchy-Davenport theorem states that, if p is prime and A,B are nonempty subsets of cardinality r, s in Z/pZ, the cardinality of the sumset A + B = {a + b | a ∈ A, b ∈ B} is bounded below by min(r+ s− 1, p); moreover, this lower bound is sharp. Natural extensions of this result consist in determining, for each group G and positive integers r, s ≤ |G|, the analogous sharp lower bound, namely...
متن کاملJa n 20 09 Large zero - free subsets of Z / p Z
A finite subset A of an abelian group G is said to be zero-free if the identity element of G cannot be written as a sum of distinct elements from A. In this article we study the structure of zero-free subsets of Z/pZ the cardinality of which is close to largest possible. In particular, we determine the cardinality of the largest zero-free subset of Z/pZ, when p is a sufficiently large prime. Fo...
متن کاملRestricted set addition in groups, II. A generalization of the Erdo"s-Heilbronn conjecture
In 1980, Erdős and Heilbronn posed the problem of estimating (from below) the number of sums a+b where a ∈ A and b ∈ B range over given sets A,B ⊆ Z/pZ of residues modulo a prime p, so that a 6= b. A solution was given in 1994 by Dias da Silva and Hamidoune. In 1995, Alon, Nathanson and Ruzsa developed a polynomial method that allows one to handle restrictions of the type f(a, b) 6= 0, where f ...
متن کاملUnipotent Classes in the Classical Groups Parameterized by Subgroups
This paper describes how to use subgroups to parameterize unipotent classes in the classical algebraic group in characteristic 2. These results can be viewed as an extension of the Bala-Carter Theorem, and give a convenient way to compare unipotent classes in a group G with unipotent classes of a subgroup X where G is exceptional and X is a Levi subgroup of classical type.
